Ranger Rick

Last week each pair of students were asked to read an article from a recent issue of Ranger Rick.  Then they had to figure out the main idea of their article.  Next, each student was asked to find at least 5 details that support their main idea.  Finally, they used these notes to write a summary of their article on Google Docs.  Below are some of these summaries.

Sea otters
Sea otters spend almost their whole lives in the water.  Sea otters actually eat there, sleep there, and have babies there.  Sea otters sleep by floating on their  backs.  A mother sea otter gives birth to one baby sea otter each year.  The baby sea otter is called a pup.  When the mother sea otter goes to hunt for food she wraps the pup in a blanket of seaweed and the pup falls asleep.   They eat crabs, mussels, octopuses, sea urchins, and abalone.  The northern sea otters eat fish.  Sea otters eat about a quarter pound of its weight every day.  The mother sea otter hunts by feeling for food with their sensitive whiskers at the bottom of the ocean.  That is how sea otters live in the water.

Master Builders

The main idea of the story is how animals make their nest.  There are millions of termites to make a home that is made out of mud and animal poop. A harvest mouse nest is about the size of a tennis ball and is high off the ground.  Beavers can cut down a tree with their mouth and their nest is made out of wood.  A wasp nest is made out of paper and a type of plant.  A bald eagle can make it's nest as tall as a house.  These types of animals are master builders.

Best Buddies
Our article is about different animals being buddies.
For example buble the elephant parents were killed by people, so she got a dog for a friend because she didn’t have elephant friends.  There are three friends that were found in poor health in someones basement.   They were together since they were cubs.  These three friends were a tiger, a bear and and a lion.  Some different kinds of animals can be friends.

Master Builders                  Made by Angelina and Liberty

Our story is about how animals build their amazing homes.  A beaver makes a home by chipping wood so they can stop a stream’s flow and so the stream’s flow doesn’t get into the beaver’s house.  Beavers build dams with woods, sticks and muds.  A wasp makes paper
for their nest with sticky spit and/or plant stems.  The weaver ants pulls on a leaf's edge and
then they use their sticky spit to glue the leaf to it self.  A mama harvest mouse wove her
tennis ball shaped nest out of grass.  The bald eagle makes a big nest so it can come
back to his/her nest year after year.  This is how some animals are amazing builders.

Sea otters
Sea otters spend their whole life in the water.  They sleep, hunt, eat, bathe, and have babies in the water.  When sea otters sleep they go in a sleeping bag of sea weed so they don't drift away.  They hunt by going deep in the water and they use their whiskers to feel for clams and other hidden animals in the sand.  Sea otters eat by taking a rock and putting it on its chest. Then the sea otters take the clam and bang it against the rock. They take the inside of the clam and eat it.  When sea otters bathe they roll over and over.  When a sea otter rolls over it rubs its fur with its paws.  Last they have babies in the water.  Sea otters spend all of their lives in the water.
